LISTED MAKER-GEORGE LOWE,

CHESTER.  CIRCA 1830.

An attractive Cheshire, flame mahogany case with boxwood stringing, moonphase and 8-day movement, striking the hours on a bell.

The moon dial has a galleon seascape alternating with a cottage rural scene. The arched painted dial has subsidiary seconds and calendar dials with well-painted roses and other flowers in the four corners. The arch has the lunar calendar above the two terrestrial hemispheres.

The arched hood has swan neck pediments finished with brass patarae and brass finials with freestanding turned twist pillars flanking the glazed door. Matching turned twist columns flanks the triple arched flame mahogany trunk door and the paneled canted base is decorated with attractive boxwood and rosewood cross banding. The clock case standing on ogee bracket feet.

The good  8-day movement has been cleaned, overhauled and  is in good working order.

George Lowe is listed in Keith Appleby`s book “Clockmakers of Cheshire” as a Clock and Watchmaker working in Chester between 1793-1846.
