MAKER-HENRY GAMBLE
Bramley, Leeds

Listed Maker –1739-52

A mid 18th century longcase clock with  arched brass dial ,moon phase and 8-day movement in an oak case striking the hours on a bell.

The arched dial has subsidiary seconds and calendar dials. The brass dial with silvered chapter ring has good scrollwork depicting flowers and birds to the centre and the makers name in the arch.The rotating moon dial has an alternating  stars scene and a landscape with a church on a hill and figures by a lake.  The oak case has a shaped topped long trunk door,reeded columns to the hood and trunk and a panelled base.

The 8-day movement has been cleaned,polished and overhauled and is in good working order.

Henry Gamble is  listed in Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World(21st Edition) by Brian Loomes  as working in Bramley,Leeds,Yorkshire between 1739 and 1752. Later he was working at Farnley(near Pudsey),near Leeds and he died suddenly in 1780 “after eating a hearty dinner” His obituary in the Leeds Mercury described him as an eminent clockmaker.
